The Urban China Initiative (UCI) aims to establish a think-tank with the expressed mission of finding and implementing effective solutions to China’s urbanization challenge. To fulfill its mission, UCI has four specific aims:
- Solutions – Develop the best and most innovative solutions to urban development issues in China.
- Talent – Provide a hub for China's leading domestic and international urban thinkers and professionals, and a magnet for the best global thinkers.
- Dialogue – Enhance communication between China’s national, provincial and local leaders on urbanization issues.
- Pilots – Support China’s urban leaders in establishing pilots based on the Initiative’s research and dialogues on urban issues.
Combining these aims, UCI seeks to pursue high-impact knowledge initiatives: fact-based, objective analyses of strategies available to urban leaders, with the goal of unearthing scalable solutions for China’s hundreds of diverse cities.
UCI was established in 2011 by McKinsey & Company as a collaborative project with Tsinghua University’s School of Public Policy and Management and Columbia University. UCI maintains a strategic partnership with the Chinese Society of Urban Studies, and is advised and funded by leading domestic and multinational corporations.
